Magnetic Phone Wallet: Getting Cards Out, Keeping Them In, What to Check

A magnetic phone wallet snaps onto the magnetic ring in your phone or case and carries a few cards on the back. Two questions come up in the owner threads we read: how you get a card back out, and whether a card can fall out. This guide covers both, using what owners report, then lists what to check before you buy.

We sell magnetic wallet stands, so read this as a shop’s notes on its own listings plus what owners report online.

What a magnetic phone wallet needs

A magnetic phone wallet needs a magnetic surface to hold to. People also search for it as a phone card holder, a MagSafe card holder or a magnetic card holder for a phone, and the need is the same under each name. Two of our own listings put it this way.

Count the cards you carry before you choose, and do not assume a number.

How cards come out of a slot wallet

In a Reddit thread titled “How do you take cards out of this?”, a buyer of a magnetic wallet wrote that pulling a card out was near impossible. Three replies we read describe a wallet with an opening in the back, which we call the slot type here, and they describe the same way of using it.

  • One commenter said you are supposed to remove the wallet and push the card out from the hole in the back.
  • One commenter said they have used these wallets for years with three cards daily, running a thumb up the slot on the back side.
  • One commenter said they always have to remove the wallet from the phone and push the cards through the hole, and that they started using a different wallet instead.

The mechanism is the same in all three accounts. The difference is whether the owner minds taking the wallet off each time. If you pay by card several times a day, think about that before you choose this type.

Will a single card fall out?

A second Reddit thread asked whether any MagSafe wallets can hold only one card without it falling out. Two owners answered from different designs.

  • One commenter said they sometimes carry only one card in their wallet and it never fell out, because something inside gives some resistance.
  • Another commenter said their wallet has a little magnetic flap to keep the cards in.

Both are single reports about other brands’ wallets. They point to two things to look for if you carry one or two cards: a pocket with some grip inside, or a flap that closes over the cards.

Wallets that are also stands

If you want a phone wallet stand, the two wallets linked above are both sold as one.

  • Our listing for the envelope-fold wallet says actual fit and support must be checked before use.
  • Our listing for the strap wallet says product photos show the band arching into a landscape phone support.

Treat the stand as a convenience, and test it with your own phone and the cards you carry.

Check before you buy

Work through these in order.

  1. Find the magnetic ring. Look for a magnetic ring in your case’s description, or in your phone’s if you carry it bare. Our magnetic phone grip guide covers that check in more detail.
  2. Pick how you want cards to come out. A slot wallet may mean taking the wallet off to push a card out. A flap wallet closes over the cards instead. Look at the listing photos to see which you are buying.
  3. Count your cards. Buy for the number you carry every day, and check the listing for a stated capacity. If it states none, ask the seller before you order.
  4. Decide what else goes on the back. If you also use a magnetic grip or a magnetic car mount, plan which one sits on the ring, because the wallet will be on it.

Quick answers

How do you take cards out of a magnetic phone wallet?

It depends on the type. With a slot wallet, expect to take it off the phone and push the card out from the back. Check the listing photos for how the pocket opens before you order.

Will one card fall out of a magnetic wallet?

It depends on the pocket. Look for a pocket with some grip inside or a flap that closes, and test it over a table when it arrives.

How many cards does a magnetic phone wallet hold?

Go by the capacity the listing states, and ask the seller if it states none. Do not assume.
