A phone strap holder is a flat strap or band on the back of your phone that your hand or a finger slides through. It attaches in one of two ways: an adhesive backing that stays on, or a magnetic base that lifts off. Start from the back of your phone, then choose a strap that adjusts to your hand. This guide covers both types and how to place one.
We sell phone straps, so read this as a shop’s notes on its own listings plus what owners say online.
What a phone strap holder is
People search for the same thing under several names: a phone hand strap, a phone strap for the hand, a phone grip strap, a phone loop grip, or a phone finger holder when the band is sized for one finger. All of them do the same job. The strap lies flat against the phone, and your hand or finger goes between the strap and the phone.
That is the difference from a pop-out grip, which you pinch between two fingers. With a strap, the phone hangs on your hand even when your grip relaxes.
Adhesive straps
An adhesive strap sticks to the back of the phone or case and stays there. Our listing for the Pink Snap-Adjustable Backed Phone Hand Strap says the stitched strap fastens with two visible snap heads at selectable positions. The same listing says a rear adhesive layer is supplied and that attachment requires a suitable phone or case surface.
The snaps matter because hands differ. A strap that is too loose lets the phone swing, and one that is too tight is hard to slide into. Set the snaps so the strap holds the back of your fingers without pinching.
An adhesive strap suits a phone or case that has no magnetic ring. Because it stays on, choose the spot carefully before you press it down.
Magnetic finger bands
A magnetic strap holds to the magnetic ring in a phone or case and comes off when you want the back clear. Our listing for the Gold Folding Phone Finger Band with Segmented Ring Base names the band as silicone and requires a compatible magnetic phone or case. The same listing shows portrait and landscape phone support, so the band also works as a stand when you put the phone down.
If you are not sure whether your case has a ring, our magnetic phone grip guide explains how to check. If a prop is the main thing you want, the phone kickstand guide sorts those by attachment.
What owners say about straps
Two posts on Reddit show what people notice. Each is one person’s account of another brand’s product.
One owner who had used PopSockets for years wrote that a strap-style magnetic grip was way more comfortable for one-hand scrolling and felt more secure because the finger goes through it. The same owner wrote that it doubles as a kickstand and pops off instantly for charging.
One former grip user wrote that the adhesive was a pain to remove from their phone case. That is a reason to decide up front whether you want a strap that stays or one that lifts off.
Get the fit right
Work through these in order.
- Look at the back of your phone or case. A magnetic ring means a magnetic strap can snap on. No ring means an adhesive strap, or a case that has a ring.
- Decide whether the strap should come off. Choose magnetic if you want the back clear for charging or a car mount. Choose adhesive if you want the strap to stay in one place.
- Find where your fingers rest. Hold the phone the way you normally do and note where your middle fingers sit. That is where the strap belongs, which may be lower than the center of the phone.
- Set the size. On an adjustable strap, pick the setting that holds your fingers snugly and still lets them slide in and out.
- Try it over something soft. Let the phone hang from the strap over a bed or a sofa before you trust it on the street.
Quick answers
Is a phone strap better than a pop-out grip?
It depends on how you hold the phone. A strap lies flatter and wraps your fingers. A pop-out grip is quicker to pinch and release. Our phone grip guide compares the grip types.
Can I take a phone strap off for wireless charging?
A magnetic strap lifts off. An adhesive strap stays on, so plan to charge by cable or choose a magnetic one.
Where should a phone hand strap sit on the back of the phone?
Where your fingers rest when you hold the phone one-handed. Check that it clears the camera before you fix it in place.
